Antiseptic. The main active ingredient is molecular iodine, which has antiseptic property. When applied to extensive skin surfaces, iodine has a resorptive effect: it participates in the synthesis of thyroxine and triiodothyronine.
Ethanol slows the excretion of iodine and reduces its irritating effect on tissues.
It has a bactericidal effect on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative flora (most active on Streptococcus spp. and Escherichia coli), as well as on pathogenic fungi and yeasts. Most strains of Staphylococcus spp. resistant, but with prolonged use of the drug in 80% of cases inhibition of staphylococcal flora is noted. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant.
