Omeprazole is an anti-ulcer drug from the group of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) designed to reduce the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. It is used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers, GERD (heartburn, reflux), erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, as well as to protect the mucosa when taking NSAIDs and eradication of Helicobacter pylori.
The main indications for use:
Peptic ulcer: Treatment and prevention of exacerbations of gastric and duodenal ulcers.
GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease): Relief of heartburn, acid belching and treatment of reflux esophagitis.
Gastric Protection: Prevention of erosive and ulcerative lesions caused by taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, e.g., ibuprofen, aspirin).
Helicobacter pylori eradication: As part of complex therapy with antibiotics to kill the bacterium causing the ulcer.
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: A disease associated with increased acid secretion.
The drug is often prescribed to relieve symptoms of dyspepsia associated with increased acidity. Omeprazole is available as capsules (usually 20 mg each) and is long-acting, relieving discomfort, heaviness, and stomach pain.
